LCAP Advisory Committee Application - November 9 – Dec 8, 2015 - In 2013 - 2014, the state of California changed the way it funds school districts.  The new model, called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), allows districts more freedom in how funds are spent but also required the development of a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) that aligns spending district goals for student achievement.

One key aspect of the LCAP process is the engagement of parents/guardians and staff in providing input and feedback.  Annually, the plan is updated and the committee will meet to review, revise and/or develop new goals.  NUSD is in the process of establishing the LCAP Advisory Committee.

NUSD is seeking application for parents and teachers to participate on the advisory committee.  If you are interested in participating on this committee you must be available for meetings on the mornings of:

January 21                   March 8

April 13                       May 10 All

The deadline for applying is December 8, 2015. The Board will review the applications on December 15, 2015.  If you are unable to access online paper copies are available at school offices.

The CDC has reported an outbreak of measles in the country currently involving 17 states.  Alameda County alone has 6 confirmed cases of measles, and additional cases of measles are likely to occur.  Newark Unified School District would like to take this opportunity to provide some information about measles and how to protect our community.

Measles is a very contagious infection that is easily spread through the air and by direct contact, and can manifest in an infected individual 8-13 (and up to 21) days after exposure.  Symptoms are as follows:  high fever (101°F or more), cough (hoarseness), red eyes (light sensitive), runny nose, rash (blotchy dark red and usually comes 3 days after the fever).  Serious and even life-threatening complications can occur.  Because measles is so contagious, it can spread rapidly once introduced and cause outbreaks.

If your child has not received at least two doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine and is exposed to measles, he/she may be excluded from attending school or child care to prevent further spread of the disease.  Information about exclusion of unimmunized students is available on the California Personal Beliefs Exemption form as well as in the California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 6060.

What can you do?

  • The MMR vaccine is safe and very effective at preventing measles infection.  Two doses of MMR are routinely recommended for all children.
  • All parents and guardians should be sure that their children are up-to-date with their measles vaccination.  Children should receive their first dose of MMR vaccine at 12-15 months of age and their second dose routinely at 4-6 years of age.
  • If your child has not received the recommended doses, contact your health care provider as soon as possible to arrange for immunization.  If you do not have a healthcare provider, you can call the Alameda County Public Health Department at (510) 267-8000 for a list of clinics, or visit http://www.acphd.org/clinics.aspx. For more information about measles, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at http://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html.

If you would like to have your child attend a different elementary school for the 2015-2016 school year, you will need to complete an Open Enrollment (Intra-District Transfer) Request form. These forms can be picked up at the office of the school your child is currently attending. Space is always limited so it is extremely important to fill out and turn in the form as quickly as possible. All Open Enrollment (Intra-District Transfer) Requests should be turned in to the District Office between Monday, January 5, 2015 and Friday, January 30, 2015. Thank you.

Open Enrollment (Intra-District Transfer) Requests that cannot be approved before the school year ends will be reviewed beginning the week before school begins to see if space for more transfers has become available. Student Services will continue to check for available space daily for approximately 10-school days. Requesting families will be called as soon as the request can be accommodated. Please call Student Services at (510) 818-4202 if you have changed your phone number from what you provided when you turned in the request for transfer.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.

Schools have no information in regards to your student’s application, so please make sure to contact the district. Thank you.

Gracias.

A Teacher for All Seasons

A teacher is like Spring,
Who nurtures new green sprouts,
Encourages and leads them,
Whenever they have doubts.

A teacher is like Summer,
Whose sunny temperament
Makes studying a pleasure,
Preventing discontent.

A teacher is like Fall,
With methods crisp and clear,
Lessons of bright colors
And a happy atmosphere.

A teacher is like Winter,
While it’s snowing hard outside,
Keeping students comfortable,
As a warm and helpful guide.

Teacher, you do all these things,
With a pleasant attitude;
You’re a teacher for all seasons,
And you have my gratitude!
